The rigorous selection process is multi-phased and includes peer nominations, third party research, and evaluation of professional achievement. The Court of Appeal for the Third Appellate District in Sacramento has issued a decision in favor of Athena Roussos's client in a marital dissolution case. Athena represented the appellant, wife, who had objected to having her divorce finalized after her husband passed away; the husband's daughter from another relationship requested the final divorce. The court of appeal reversed and vacated the final divorce, restoring the marriage. You can read the decision here.

Athena Roussos is excited to begin teaching a new course at Pacific McGeorge School of Law called "The Business of Lawyering" along with co-teacher Robert Murphy of Kronick, Moskovitz, Tiedemann & Girard. The class will explore the business side of law firms, including the critical skills needed to estabish and operate a law firm as a solo or small firm practitioner.

Athena Roussos has been elected as Secretary of the Sacramento County Bar Association Appellate Section. Athena has been involved with the Appellate Section as an officer or board member for several years.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel published an article regarding Athena Roussos's client, George Petroutsas, who is involved in an international custody dispute. Mr. Petroutsas's ex-wife abducted their child, Andoni, in June 2010 and is holding him in Greece. Mr. Petroutsas was awarded sole custody of Andoni in California and a U.S. federal court has concluded that Andoni's habitual residence is California. Athena Roussos has been appointed to the State Bar of California Appellate Law Advisory Commission. The Commission passes upon applications for certification and re-certification as an appellate specialist; drafts and grades specialist examinations; evaluates and accredits programs and providers of continuing legal education; and assists the Board of Legal Specialization in administering the specialist program.

April 2010
The Third District Court of Appeal issued a published decision in Escobar v. Flores, affirming a trial court decision in favor of Athena Roussos's client, Cesar Flores. The court affirmed a decision by a judge in Mono County to allow Mr. Flores' child to remain in the United States, based on the child's objection to being returned to Chile, where his mother resides. The court affirmed a ruling that the child, who was 8 years old at the time of trial, was of sufficient age and maturity to state such an objection under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. Athena Roussos successfully represented the appellant in a published decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Asvesta v. Petroutsas. The court reversed the district court's decision to extend recognition, based on principles of comity, to a foreign judgment issued under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. March 2009
On March 19, 2009, Athena Roussos obtained a victory for her clients in the California Supreme Court in a case involving the adoption of children by their guardians. In Guardianship of Ann S., the Court held that Probate Code section 1516.5, which allows guardians to adopt children who have been in their custody for at least two years if the adoption is in the best interests of the child, is constitutional on its face, and it does not infringe upon the fundamental rights of biological parents.
